About Group

We are an AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) chartered club that flies in the Galveston Indiana area. Through the generosity of the Town of Galveston we have a flying site that costs the club virtually nothing. This allows us to have club dues of only $25 per year. We are primarily sport flyers just out to have a good time and we welcome any new members, whether they have experience or not. We have a couple of members of the club that have been informally designated as "instructors" that will help non-experienced pilots get their planes safely in the air and teach them to fly with the use of a "buddy-box". There is never a charge for lessons at our field. Try that at the local Golf course! As with most clubs, Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days at the field but there is activity during the week as well. Our field is open 365 days of the year. Heck, we even fly off of the snow sometimes!

About Our Field
Our field is several miles west of the town of Galveston Indiana on what used to be a paved octagon pad that military aircraft used for practice and training during the 1940's. The "pad" is surrounded by farm land which means that noise is not a big issue. This also allows for a site free of trees and with plenty of area to fly without worry of "putting one in" a residential area. While there is a grass strip on the property that accommodates full size aircraft, it receives very little use. The pad had long since been abandoned as a conventional airstrip and had become overgrown with grass and weeds through the asphalt. The town of Galveston leases the area to us for $1 per year. The club has stripped the asphalt of weeds in an area of the pad to provide a paved, though a little bumpy, runway and pit area. We have recently applied several layers of "chip and seal" to the runway area. Basically, it is layers of tar with small rocks much like a county road is "refreshed" short of repaving. After application, it was rolled in and it now provides a much improved runway surface. We have 8-9 wood tables to allow work on planes and starting without having to get on your knees. In 2001 a shelter was constructed which provides some shade on the hot days and protection from unexpected rain.

About Our Planes
As mentioned above, our club is made up of primarily sport flyers. While we welcome any type and size aircraft at the field, the current make up is primarily .40- 90, 2-stroke sport planes in both kit and ARF form. We have some smaller and some larger. Some are absolutely beautiful and some are down right ugly!

About Our Members
We welcome any age flyer. We have had members from as young as 8 to their 80's. Everyone is fairly laid back and none of us takes the hobby too seriously. We all try to help each other out in any way we can. Basically, we are just a bunch of guys trying to have a good time. After all, that is what a hobby is all about. Our flying skills range from "still on the buddy-box" to darn good, with everything in between.

Meetings
During the winter months we have a minimal amount of meetings. As spring approaches, we start having meetings on the third Saturday of every month at 11 AM. To start out, we have them at a variety of establishments in the town of Galveston. As warmer (i.e. flyable) weather approaches, meetings are held at the flying field.

Membership Requirements: Being an AMA chartered club, AMA membership is a prerequisite for membership.
